The creation of a 'space' for Overlanding New Zealand

Numerous metaphorical mounds, hills and at times mountains have slowed the progress of the creation of 'Overlanding New Zealand' but we decided that 2020 would be the year to draw all the elements together to begin solidifying our knowledge into a website, with reach across social media platforms to engage at all levels with Overlanders from New Zealand and across the globe. By providing a means to engage and communicate across all mediums, we hope this will further improve the feeling of community among us.

We look forward to meeting you on the tracks, in the near future.

An Explanation of Overlanding

Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries.

Overlanding has increased in the past couple of decades, and is getting ever more popular, in large part influenced by the Camel Trophy event run from 1980 to 2000 with routes crossing some intensely difficult terrain. Through the use of the Internet it is much easier to find the information required for extended overlanding trips in foreign lands.

While some commercially built overlanding capable vehicles are produced, many overlanders consider the preparation of their vehicle a paramount part of the experience.
